What balayage is
Balayage comes from a French word meaning to sweep. The designer paints lightener or color onto chosen sections by hand, usually keeping the roots darker and letting the color build toward the ends. The result is a soft gradient with no sharp stripes.
Because the placement is freehand, no two balayage jobs look the same. Two people with the same photo can get different results if their hair length, density and starting color differ.
Who it suits
- People who want a lighter, dimensional look without a full-head change.
- People who dislike a visible line when roots grow in.
- Hair that is long enough for the color to travel. Very short hair has less room for a gradient.
If you want one flat, even shade from root to tip, a full-head color is the more direct choice.
Balayage compared with its neighbors
The three techniques overlap, which is why people confuse them. Our highlights page and ombre page explain the other two. A broader comparison is in the guide on bleach, balayage and highlights.
| Balayage | Highlights | Ombre | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Placement | Hand-painted, often around the face and mid-lengths | Thin sections spread through the head | Dark top fading into light ends |
| Root look | Soft, roots usually stay natural | Can show a line as roots grow | Roots stay dark by design |
| Grow-out | Usually gentle | Depends on spacing | Usually gentle |

Dark hair and the lightening step
On dark Asian hair, balayage nearly always involves lightening the painted sections. The sections often pass through orange and yellow before they reach a softer tone. A toner is commonly used afterward to adjust the shade, though the designer chooses the steps.
If you want a very pale result, ask whether more than one round is needed. The page on bleach covers what lightening does and what to expect.
What to bring and say
Photos matter more for balayage than for most color. Bring several, from different angles, and say which one you like most. Point out where you want the lightest area: around the face, mid-length or ends.
- Show your usual parting. Balayage is placed around it.
- Say how often you are willing to return for maintenance.
- List past color, bleach and perm dates.

Frequently asked questions
How much is balayage at WENEED Haeundae?
There is no printed balayage price on the menu. The designer quotes after checking your hair length, thickness and the look you want.
Does balayage need bleach?
On dark hair it usually involves lightening the painted sections. Your designer confirms the steps for your hair.
Will I have a line when my roots grow in?
Balayage is usually blended so the grow-out looks soft. How soft depends on how close to the roots the lighter color starts.
How long does balayage last?
Often several months before a refresh is wanted, but this varies with your hair and aftercare. The designer can advise a schedule.
