Why curly hair needs a different plan

Curls shrink when dry, spring in different directions, and often change from one part of the head to another. A cut that looks even when wet can look uneven once the curls dry. That is why a curly cut depends on seeing your hair in its natural state.

Two people with “curly hair” may have very different needs. Loose waves, tight coils and frizzy curls respond differently to scissors, thinning and layering. Be ready to describe yours in specific terms.

Tell the designer about your texture

A short list of facts helps more than a long explanation:

• Is your hair wavy, curly or coily? Do all sections have the same pattern?
• How long does it appear when dry, and how long when you pull it straight?
• Is it natural, or from a perm? Perms grow out differently, and the old curl can sit on top of the new growth.
• Do you wear it wet, dry or with product? Which products?
• Which part bothers you: width at the sides, frizz at the crown, or ends that will not curl?

A photo of your hair dry, worn the way you usually style it, is the most useful reference you can bring.

Arrive with your hair dry

For curly hair, come with your hair dry and in its normal shape if you can. Many designers prefer to look at the pattern before the first wash, because that is the shape the cut has to work with. If your hair has been straightened or blow-dried, the designer may ask how it looks when it is naturally dry.

Do not flatten it with a hot iron the morning of your appointment, because that hides the real curl pattern.

Price and designers

Cut or perm: what you are really asking for

A cut changes the outline and removes weight. A perm changes the curl itself. Natural curls do not need a perm, but some guests add one to make curls looser, tighter or more regular. Care after the cut

Curly hair tends to be drier than straight hair, because natural oils travel slowly down the curl. Gentle shampoo, a conditioner for the lengths, and little brushing when dry usually help. Many curly guests detangle with a wide-tooth comb while the hair is wet and covered with conditioner. Ask the designer which routine suits your hair.
