What a men’s perm does
A perm changes the shape of hair with a chemical step and, often, heat. For men, the goal is usually one of these: more volume on top, a soft wave or curl, or hair that lies flat at the sides and back. Many men get a perm because it makes daily styling shorter. The effect then grows out with the hair.
It is not a quick fix for every problem. Thin hair, very short hair and recently bleached hair respond differently. The designer decides after looking at your hair.
The main types for men
- Down perm: calms hair that pushes outward at the sides or back, so it sits closer to the head. It is often combined with a cut.
- Design perm: adds shape and movement, from gentle waves to clear curls, to the top and front.

Which perm for which hair
- Sides stick out after every cut: a down perm, often with the cut.
- Hair is flat on top: volume magic or a root perm.
- You want natural waves: a design perm.
- You want a defined, clean curl: ask about the iron perm.
Hair length matters. A perm usually needs some length to hold a shape, and your designer can say whether your hair is long enough or whether to grow it a little first. Prepare and tell the designer

- How you dry and style your hair, and which products you use.
- Whether you want to keep the look for a short time or as long as possible.
- Any scalp sensitivity.
Perms use chemicals, so honest information keeps the process safer. If you also want color, plan the order with the designer. Doing a perm and a strong color in the same visit is not always possible.
Aftercare
General care that applies after most perms: use a gentle shampoo, avoid heavy heat for a while, and use a light product that suits the shape. Do not brush wet hair aggressively.
