Two ways to describe a perm: shape and method
When people talk about a Korean perm, they mix two ideas. The shape is what the hair looks like: where the curl bends, how big it is, and where it sits. The method is how the hair is shaped: with solution only, or with solution and heat. Choosing a shape comes first, and then the designer proposes a method that suits your hair.
The designer explains the exact steps and timing at the salon. What follows is general information.
C-curl and S-curl
- C-curl: the ends bend inward or outward in a single curve, like the letter C. It gives a soft, tidy finish and is often chosen to add shape to a bob or medium-length hair.
- S-curl: the hair waves in an S shape from the middle to the ends. It looks looser and more flowing, and it is often chosen for longer hair.

Cold perm and digital perm
A cold perm usually shapes hair with chemical solutions and rods at room temperature. The result tends to be springy and, when hair is wet, more defined. A digital perm uses heated rods and a controlled temperature along with the solution, and it is often chosen for a softer wave that looks natural when the hair is dry and styled.
