Prices are taken from our salon menu (October 2026). “From” means the lowest price on the menu; the final price depends on the designer, hair length and condition. Your designer confirms the final price before work starts.

What a root touch-up covers

Hair grows from the roots, so after a few weeks you see a band of your natural color above dyed lengths. A root touch-up applies color only to that band. The rest of your hair is left alone, which keeps the service smaller and lets earlier color stay as it is.

It is a maintenance service, not a color change. If you want a new shade through the whole head, look at the full-head color page.

How to tell if you need roots or a full color

  • Roots only: the lengths still look good and the only issue is the regrowth line.
  • Full color: the lengths have faded, gone brassy or look uneven.
  • Roots plus tone: roots are done, and the designer refreshes the lengths with a light tone.

The designer decides after looking at your hair. The menu lists “Root touch-up” as one row, so ask what the quote includes if you want the lengths refreshed too.

Matching the color you already have

The main difficulty is matching. The lengths have faded or oxidized since the last dye, and fresh color on the roots can look darker or warmer than the ends. Designers handle this by choosing a formula slightly different from the original, and sometimes blending the color a little into the lengths.

Bring a photo of your hair as it was right after the last color, and if you remember, tell the designer which shade it was. For lightened hair, see the bleach page, because roots on bleached hair are a different job than a simple dye.

Roots on lightened hair

If your lengths are bleached blonde, roots usually need lightening and then toning. That is more work than dyeing roots a natural shade. The roots also lift faster than the rest of the hair because the scalp warms them, so designers usually take care to avoid overlapping onto already-lightened hair, which can cause breakage.

Overlapping is a risk to ask about, especially if you did a home touch-up before.

Also mention how the roots feel. Roots that are oily, irritated or recently permed need a gentler approach, and the designer may adjust the timing or formula. If you wear a part, say which side, because the part line shows regrowth first.

Timing and upkeep

Hair grows roughly one centimeter a month, though this varies. Many people book a root service when the band is about one to two centimeters, or when it starts to bother them. A darker shade shows regrowth sooner, and a shade close to your natural color shows it later.

  • Avoid washing for a day if your designer suggests it.
  • Use a shampoo for color-treated hair.
  • If you want a gray-specific plan, read the gray coverage page.
