What a root volume perm is
A root perm treats only the first few centimeters of the hair near the scalp. It trains the hair to stand up, so the crown and the top look fuller. The length and ends are left alone, so it is not a way to add curl all over.
It is often chosen when hair lies flat by lunchtime even after blow-drying.
Because only the root area is treated, the work is more targeted than a full perm. The designer decides how far down from the scalp to go and how much lift to build, depending on your hair length and how fast it grows.
