What makes a cut look Korean
The term is loose, but a few features come up again and again: soft layers that move rather than stand out, light bangs, side pieces that frame the face, and lengths that suit hair texture. Styles change with trends, so use the shapes below as a vocabulary, not a rulebook.
The strongest results come from matching the shape to your hair type and daily styling habits, which the designer assesses in person.
Common shapes and what they do
- Layered cut. Layers add movement and reduce weight. A long layered cut keeps length but looks lighter. See the layered cut page.
- Bob. A cut at the jaw or chin, in a straight or soft-curved line. A bob can be blunt or have inner layers. See the bob cut page.
- Bangs and see-through bangs. Light bangs that show a little forehead are common. Heavier bangs suit a different look. The bangs page explains the options.
- Face-framing pieces. Shorter strands near the face that soften the jaw or cheeks.
- Short cuts. Cropped and short bobs with the weight kept in the nape.
How to choose for your hair
Fine hair. A blunt line and few layers keep it looking full.
Thick hair. More layers or thinning can remove weight and help the cut move. See the thick hair cut page.
Wavy or curly hair. Layers behave differently on curls, and the designer adapts the shape. See the curly hair cut page.
Straight hair. It shows the line of the cut clearly, so precision matters.
Face shape and hair part also steer the choice. A designer often adjusts the length of the face-framing pieces to soften a strong jaw or add length to a round face. Read the face shape cut page for the general ideas, and tell the designer which side you part on.

A cut with a perm or color
Hair length matters before any shape is chosen. As a general guide, long layers keep most of the length and add lightness, medium lengths show the layers more and short cuts depend on a clean line at the nape. A cut also changes how a perm or color falls, so decide the whole plan, not only the cut, before you sit down. Ask the designer how the shape will look as it grows out over the next two or three months, so the cut still works when you are between visits.
Many people pair a layered cut with a soft perm for body or with color for tone. Plan the order with the designer, who may cut first and then perm. Hair history matters here, especially bleach.
