Korean hair salon etiquette for foreigners: what to expect
Korean hair salon etiquette is simple: arrive on time, tell the designer your hair history, show photos and confirm the price before work starts. Customs vary by salon, so treat this as a general guide.

Before the visit
Salons in Korea are often organized around the designer’s schedule. A late arrival can affect the next guest, so aim to arrive a few minutes early, especially on a first visit. If you are going to be late, tell the salon as early as you can.
- Check the opening hours. WENEED Haeundae is open every day from 10:00 to 20:00.
- Check the route and the stairs. The salon is on the 2nd floor, reached by stairs only.
- Read the price list. Examples: women’s cut ₩25,000, men’s cut from ₩20,000, standard perm from ₩75,000.
When you arrive
Greet the staff and say your name or booking details. You may be shown a seat or asked to wait. Many salons offer a place for coats and bags. Keep valuables with you. The designer usually starts by looking at your hair and asking about your goal.
This is the right moment to show your photos and your hair history. The guide on explaining your hairstyle shows how.
Talking about the price
Many Korean salons list prices by designer, and the final price can depend on length, density and condition. It is normal and polite to ask the price of your service before it starts. At WENEED, Each designer with a published price sheet has a price sheet, and the designer confirms the final price before work begins. “From” on a menu means the lowest price, not a fixed one. The price list shows the rows.
During the service
- Speak up early. If the length looks wrong, say so before the cut goes further. Pointing to the length on your own body works well.
- Say if something hurts. Heat from a dryer or iron, tight rollers or a strong smell are all things to mention at once.
- Phones. Using a phone for photos or messages is common. Silence it and keep calls short.
- Children. If you bring a child, plan around the stairs and tell the salon in advance.
Tipping and extras
Tipping is generally not expected in Korea. We do not state any WENEED policy beyond the menu price. For a fuller answer, read do you tip at a hair salon in Korea.
After the service
Ask for care advice before you leave: how to wash a new perm, when to color again, which products to use. Typical advice is general, such as waiting a day or two before washing a fresh perm, and the designer confirms what applies to you. Photos of the finished style are useful for next time. If you come again, bring the photos and ask for the same designer if you liked the result.
Small habits that make a visit smoother
- Turn off sound on your phone before you sit down.
- Wear a top that is easy to remove or that will not be damaged by color or bleach drops.
- Tie back long hair only if the designer asks, since they need to see its natural fall.
- Bring a hair tie or clip if you need one on the way home.
- Eat before long services such as a perm or color, since they can last for hours and the exact time is confirmed by the designer.
None of these is a rule at every salon. They are small courtesies that help a designer do good work and keep the day relaxed for you.
A few common surprises
Services can take longer than you expect, especially perms and color. Plan a free half day. Stairs surprise some visitors. And menu names can differ from what you know: a 열펌 is a heat perm, and 체인지컷 is a change cut for a new style. See the perm types guide for more names.
